Guitar Speak: Impedance
by Rhoy Pamparo on Feb.17, 2011, under Personal Thoughts
Thanks to forums such as The Gear Page, every little thing that is within the flow of electricity from the guitar to the speaker has to be evaluated and even argued heavily at times. One hot topic right now is the concept of cable impedance and how it impacts the “tone” or “sonic quality” of the whole rig.
So what is “impedance”? Well, according to Wikipedia, it …
describes a measure of opposition to alternating current (AC). Electrical impedance extends the concept of resistance to AC circuits, describing not only the relative amplitudes of the voltage and current, but also the relative phases. When the circuit is driven with direct current (DC) there is no distinction between impedance and resistance; the latter can be thought of as impedance with zero phase angle.
Yeah, I got lost a little bit, too! And I have an engineering degree for crying out loud! Believe me, I’ve studied this before but never thought that it will ever come back to me later on in life and would manifest itself in a practical application … such is life. So kids, make sure you listen to your teachers!
Instead of me trying to explain this to you, I will let the “experts” out there on the net that has a better of understanding of these things nowadays …
Here’s a great article that explains how impedance relates to guitar players:

Here’s another link and it’s more of a marketing spiel:

It’s good to know some of these things but in the end, music is music. It’s either good or bad … let’s just try to make good music!
What is love?
by Rhoy Pamparo on Feb.14, 2011, under Personal Thoughts
well, it seems plain to me …
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
– 1 John 3:16 (New International Version, ©2010)
let’s celebrate love by doing that … not easy, but that is the measure.
Blue Monday?
by Rhoy Pamparo on Jan.24, 2011, under Personal Thoughts
Apparently, there has been some confusion on when Blue Monday for 2011 was supposed to be. Some say January 17 and others say it is today, January 24. Huh?!
What is Blue Monday anyway? According to our trusty Wikipedia link …
… is a name given to a date stated … to be the most depressing day of the year.
and consequently, there is also a formula on when it is supposed to be! Aren’t you amazed that some people can even tell us when are we supposed to be so depress? I wonder if these people even go out or have friends
Anyway, I don’t think I was depress last week and so far, I am not today. Oh wait, maybe the -20 degree-Celsius weather can bring me down. Nah, there are a lot of things to be joyful about, don’t you think?!
iPhoto to Aperture
by Rhoy Pamparo on Jan.19, 2011, under Personal Thoughts
Thanks to the launch of Apple’s “App Store”, I’ve managed to download Aperture for a fairly discounted price down from $199 (media) to $79 (download). I am still in the process of learning the boatload of features within it but I can say I am quite satisfied with this even though I am using it on a 32-bit 4-year old 17″ iMac. It gets slow at times but I attribute that to the condition of my machine.
Here are 3 major things I really like (as compared to iPhoto only):
- Folders (easier file management)
- Non-disruptive edits (most changes)
- Brushes (selective editing)
My original plan is to still use iPhoto primarily and Aperture as a supplement for creative editing and some heavy-duty adjustments/fixes only. After a few days of use, I have migrated all our photos to Aperture and have decided to use it full-time.
FWIW, I’ve tried Adobe’s LightRoom and it is definitely another solid choice for those who likes Adobe products. Whatever works, right
