I Am Sixty

by on May.29, 2010, under Melodic Insights

Inspiration comes from many different forms. This was inspired by a comment regarding Line 6 on a latest post @ Guitar For Worship.

This is a D-Dorian progression @ 60bpm recorded using Logic Express with PODFarm (POD XT Live)

My Dirty Little Secret, Unveiled!

by on Mar.17, 2010, under Personal Thoughts

Catalinbread's Dirty Little Secret

And you think it’s something interesting!

Thanks to my rarely-used Analogman Bi-Chorus (which was sold for fairly good price), I managed to get this “Marshall-in-a-Box” pedal. Man, only if I can buy the chops of the pros! Alas, it’s not to be! At least, getting stuff like this makes me feel like a rockstar!

First impression … as soon as I struck an open-G chord with the gain barely at 9 o’clock position, I thought that I’d be keeping this for a while!

So there, now you know my Dirty Little Secret by Catalinbread!

Xotic EP-Booster

by on Jan.22, 2010, under Melodic Insights

Days after I said that I might not buy a single pedal in 2-years, I ate my very own words. Lucky that I had a disclaimer that the decision can change in a heartbeat … and it did! :D

Well, I just got an Xotic EP-Booster. It’s supposed to be just the pre-amp section of the legendary Echoplex. Rumor has it that the pre-amp is used by guitar legends such as Page, Van Halen and Johnson to make their tones sound spectacular… Well, I really couldn’t care less whether they used it or not as I have my own reasons for getting it. I need a boost pedal & I need it small. And this pedal pretty much fit the bill. To give you a bit of scale on how small this pedal is, here’s a picture I took shortly after receiving it:

EP-Booster's small footprint

It’s very small but this thing feels like a rock! Literally, it’s very heavy for a pedal this size. Don’t be deceived by the size, though. This thing is packed with TONE!

Here’s a demo by Pro Guitar Shop …

Does it work? Yes, it does boost my signal, almost transparently. I said “almost” because it does alter the tone ever so slightly in a good way. Try it out, you might like it, too!

Gear Fasting

by on Dec.18, 2009, under Personal Thoughts

Well, I went for a 1-year “gear fasting” and I am proud to say that it is almost done! I have promised myself in the beginning of year (that is, 2009) that I will not buy any equipment/gear that is related to guitars. There was one misstep, when my wife gave me a Barber 1/2 Gainer Overdrive for my birthday. Although, technically, I didn’t buy it. So really, it’s not cheating. Isn’t it?! :)

So as a reward for being such a good boy, I am starting to look at these 2 products:

- Tascam DR-07 Hand-held Recorder
- TC Electronic Nova Repeater

Both are priced similarly, but obviously, would provide different sort of enjoyment to me. So far it’s a 50-50 proposition for both. Okay, maybe a slight edge to the Nova Repeater. C’mon, who can say “No” to a delay pedal!

Anyhow, let me know what you think!

Short 12-bar Blues Progression

by on Nov.10, 2009, under Melodic Insights

I forgot that I lived in Canada last night! I was waiting to watch the Monday Night Football game but was not aired until later due to the Hockey Hall of Fame coverage. But that’s ok, I’ve got to spend time with my old-forgotten Godin Radiator. My cheap first electric guitar that has seen more of the inside of the case since I got my Les Paul and Telecaster.

Godin Radiator

Godin Radiator

I gave it some love last night and just played this simple 12-bar blues progression:
D – D – D – D
G – G – D – D
A – G – D – D

Here it is: 12-bar Blues with Godin Radiator

Very cool!
